Pranayama is the practice of controlled breath. The breath is the connection between the body, mind and spirit. It is also a mirror of our emotions. For example, anxiety or nervousness will bring on shallow, short breath. When the mind focuses on the inhale and exhale, attention is drawn inward to the heart center. The withdrawl of the senses from the external world to the inward action of breathing gives the mind a rest from the high activity of the environment. The practice of conscious breathing will quiet the chattering mind and allow the feeling of peaceful bliss to emerge.
