All of creation is made up of five elements – earth, air, fire, water and ether. Each creation is made up of a unique mix of these elements with which we can come to understand our body, mind and the environment.

Vata is made up of the elements air & ether. The function of Vata in the body is movement. Movement of circulation, digestion, nerve impulses, thought and so on. The qualities of Vata in the body are cold, dry and light. Imbalances of Vata can manifest as dry skin, irregular digestion and difficulty focusing.

Pitta is made up of the element of fire. The function of Pitta in the body is digestion. Digestion of food, oxygen, sensory input & so on. The qualities of Pitta in the body are hot, dry and light. Imbalances of Pitta can manifest as excessive body heat, red eyes, inflammation and intensity.

Kapha is made up of the elements earth & water. Kapha in the body is physical structure, both solid and fluid. Kapha is the strength of the immune system and the ability of the body and mind to endure stress. The qualities of Kapha in the body are cold, moist and heavy. The imbalances of Kapha manifest as congestion, excessive weight and depression.

Ayurveda heals through diet, herbs, the five sense therapies, yoga & meditation. Healing occurs by balancing the qualities of a specific dosha. For example, a Vata imbalance is caused by an excess of cold, dry and light qualities in the body. Therefore, balancing Vata would consist of treatments that create warmth, moisture and heaviness in the body.
